Director’s Statement

Growing up in Italy, March 8th is one of the most important days on the calendar. When I was a child, every Women’s Day, my teacher told me the story of these Italian immigrant women who died fighting for their rights in an American Factory. When I moved to America and I told people the story that my teacher narrated to me so many times before, for many of them, it was the first time they had ever heard it. While at Santa Monica College, I took a Women’s and Gender Studies class, and I was disappointed to discover that not even the professor was familiar with the story. As an Italian immigrant myself, I feel the responsibility to uncover this untold story of the Italian-American canon. I want to tell the story of these women who journeyed to America yearning to breathe free, but instead found themselves on the front line fighting for their rights and a brighter future. I am grateful for the opportunity the SMC Film Department gave me to tell this story.
